How to Pass Time and Entertain Yourself While Travelling

Visiting new countries and cities is fun, there’s no doubt about that. But, travelling to those places is boring, especially if you’re travelling alone. It doesn’t matter how excited you are about your trip; you’ll get bored eventually! Even when you’re travelling with friends, you can’t keep up a conversation for hours. Everyone will want some quiet time sooner or later. This thought will eventually cross your mind- how to pass time and entertain yourself while travelling.

That’s why you need to prepare yourself. You need to equip yourself with many different things to fight boredom.

So, what should you do in order to pass the time? Let’s take a look.

Sleep

Yes, sleep. Just close your eyes and rest. You might think that you’re not tired, but a couple of seconds after you close your eyes you’ll start sleeping like a baby. Traveling can be stressful, so take any moment you can to breathe and relax. And, obviously, by taking a nap on the bus/train/plane you’ll feel like you’ve travelled through time – you fell asleep in one city and woke up in another, how cool is that?

Bonus tip: Don’t forget to pack your earplugs.

Write a travel journal

Writing down everything you see can be almost therapeutic. Take travel time as a means of reflection and write down your thoughts in a journal. Process everything you’ve seen and done. By writing down things you’ve experienced you won’t forget the reasons behind your trip, and you will remember more of your trip and your visit.

Read

Ok, some people hate writing. They just feel that they don’t know how to do it. Well, if you can’t write a journal, you can certainly read a book. You don’t even have to bring a real book with you. With technology these days you can have hundreds of books in your pocket.

Most people bring a book or two on their trip, but the truth is that just a couple of books are not enough, especially if you’re going to spend many hours travelling. Pack a tablet or an e-book reader and read whatever you want at any time!

Make new friends

There’s a big chance that another passenger is as bored as you are. Start a conversation with that person and befriend them. Having a long and interesting chat with the right person can completely eliminate boredom.

Be careful not to trust strangers too much, but if you meet someone exciting don’t forget to give them your e-mail. Who knows, maybe you’ll go on your next trip with that person?

Music

As Elton John said: “Music has healing power. It has the ability to take people out of themselves for a few hours.” Pull out your favourite albums and songs and dive into your own world. Music will make you forget about your worries, noisy passengers or crying kids. In order to completely isolate yourself from the world, you’ll need a good pair of headphones. Truth be told, some kids are so loud that you will need some of the best headphones in Australia to isolate the noise they make.

Traveling can be wildly fulfilling, but don’t forget to slip back into your comfort zone while travelling. Read, write, listen to music and relax. Save energy for what’s waiting for you when you arrive at your destination.
