3 Meal Ideas To Try When You’re in Phuket

If you’re planning a trip to Phuket, then you’re already the type of person who likes to try new things. From relaxing and hopping from one glorious beach to another. To embracing the exciting nightlife, there’s plenty to do at any time of day or night. But what about food? With so many new and different delicacies to try, it’s hard to know where to start!

So to help you get the best Phuket has to offer, here are 3 fantastic meal ideas for your trip. 3 meals ideas to try when you’re in Phuket.

1. Dim Sum

Although traditionally a Chinese delicacy, Dim Sum is an extremely popular food in Phuket. Due to the strong Chinese roots in the area. It can be as simple as a few bite-sized treats such as dumplings or it can be an elaborate meal made of various delights. Imagine tapas but Chinese-Thai style! Sometimes, you can get them deep-fried but most of the time you’ll find them served in bamboo steamers. You’ll also find them accompanied by a lot of hot tea in most cases.

In its simplest form, Dim Sum can be enjoyed on the go from street markets or of course if you fancy really exploring a proper Dim Sum, you can enjoy it as a sit-down meal in a restaurant. The great thing about dim sum is that you can get a whole lot of different flavours and fillings. Har Gow is a simple yet delicious combination of minced prawns and rice-based pastry. Shumai is similarly made from minced pork, crab, prawn or all three wrapped in a yellow or green won-ton wrapper. Then there are meat and fish dishes, often topped with fresh ginger. And of course, there are also the deep-fried treats such as crispy pork won tons with chilli sauce, crab cakes and spring rolls to name but a few.

Dim Sum is a real treat that can be enjoyed as breakfast lunch or dinner! It’s perhaps best enjoyed in a group so you can try a bit of everything.

2. Thai-Western Fusion

Thanks to relatively cheap air travel in the last few decades, it’s become easier for people to travel and explore different cultures. And with that, new types of cuisines have emerged. Although you may understandably be tempted to avoid western food when in Thailand, you might actually be in for a real treat if you try out a Thai and western restaurant in Phuket. Ever wondered what Italian-Asian cuisine would be like? Or how an Aussie brunch would taste with fresh and local Thai ingredients?

Of course, when looking for a fusion restaurant, be sure to avoid places that are simply selling western food for tourists. You want to find places that serve a bit of everything and some creative combinations of both Thai and Western-style foods.

3. Roti Pancakes

This is another wonderful delight that you can enjoy on the street or at a cafe or restaurant. It’s great at any time of time but particularly delicious at breakfast or brunch! A roti pancake is a unique, sweet Thai-style pancake made from flour, egg, condensed milk, sugar and salt. This delicious dough is then accompanied by a filling of your choice, usually fruit. Many places also serve these sweet delights with thick coconut milk or ice cream on top. So if you need a sweet yet stodgy pick-me-up after a long night of partying on the beach – a roti pancake is absolutely perfect!

Thailand is a treasure trove of delicious delicacies. In fact, we could probably list hundreds of little dishes and treats for you to try. If we had to pick one thing for you to try, it would definitely be Dim Sum as it is an experience in itself that includes a lot of different dishes and flavours. But generally speaking, if you’re exploring a new country and new cuisine, your best bet is to keep an open mind and try everything!
