5 Ways to Add More Peace and Quiet into Your Life

There is too much noise in the world. Finding any sense of peace and quiet is a challenge, even for people who live in rural areas. From the chiming of mobile phones to the hum of highway traffic, escaping noise is tough. While it may not be easy to find absolute silence, there are several ways to reduce the noise. These 5 ways to add more peace and quiet into your life might help anyone looking for that peace & quiet.

1. Make your workspace quiet

If you work in a loud industry, like construction, you can add some quiet by buying tools that aren’t loud. For example, quiet air compressors can make a workplace a little less headache-inducing. When you add in other quiet tools, an industrial workplace can be somewhat pleasant.

2. Turn off your phone

Our mobile phones take away much of our peace and quiet. With lights blinking and alarms blaring, they require immediate attention. While it may be difficult to turn off the phone for extended periods of time, you can add peace and quiet by turning it off occasionally.

If you always take your phone with you on walks, leave it behind. Take in the sounds of nature. Take time to look around. You do not need music all of the time.

If you cannot leave your phone, you can adjust notifications. Pick the notifications that you absolutely need. If an app interrupts your life rather than adds to it, take the app off your phone. You’ll notice how nice it is not to have to attend to your phone immediately.

3. Take time to listen

When you talk to someone, do you really listen? Or, are you thinking about what you are going to say next? People have trouble listening to others. When you are in a conversation, quiet your mind of thought and take time to listen. You’ll be surprised how good it feels to focus on someone, rather than your thoughts. The person you’re listening to will appreciate your focus, too.

4. Declutter your space

Noise doesn’t have to be just sound. Clutter can create a lack of peace. If you feel like you cannot relax because you are surrounded by clutter, it’s time to declutter. You will be surprised how good it feels to relax in a space that has just what you need.

One of the best ways to declutter is to create four piles: keep, trash, recycle, donate. As you go through your things, move each to a pile. Try to keep the trash pile small by only throwing away things that cannot be reused in some way.

After you have decided what you are going to keep, find a place for everything. Use your closets, drawers, and bins to keep your space free of unnecessary objects.

5. Take in your senses

It is easy to get caught up in our thoughts. While you are out and about, get out of your mind and notice the world. You’ll be surprised how much peace you bring into your world when taking in the world around you, rather than get caught up in your thoughts.
