Dental Care to give you a Healthy Smile

Having a healthy smile helps to boost a person’s self-esteem and makes them feel good about themselves.  A healthy smile will also help to prevent gum disease, cavities, and other dental issues.  Even if you do not have health insurance there are still ways to find an affordable dentist.  You can visit a dental school where you can get routine care such as cleanings, exams, and filings.  All work is done by students but they are supervised by a licensed dentist.  In addition to brushing daily, there are other ways in which you can have a healthy smile.

As a Banyo dentist would tell you, your mouth is the body’s first point of contact with the nutrients that you consume.  What you are eating affects not only your gums and teeth but your general health.  This can also include the beverages you drink, the frequency you drink them, and the type.  It also includes the snacks you eat and the gum you chew.

Avoid enamel damage

This layer of enamel is a protective covering and the first defence against cavities.  There are certain drinks and foods that will strip this enamel away.  When this happens it puts your smile at risk and can invite problems with your teeth and gums.  Choosing sticky sweets, sugary snacks, sodas that are filled with sugar, and fruit drinks that are sweetened can help to promote tooth decay.  When you eat or drink these types of foods for a long period of time it can cause plaque bacteria to use that sugar to produce acids.  These acids will attack the enamel of your teeth.  This can happen even if you brush every day.

Limit snacks

Eating too many snacks not only put on the weight but can also cause problems with your gums and teeth.  It is a known fact that when you eat foods at a meal more saliva is formed than when you eat snacks throughout the day.  Your saliva is what helps to wash the foods from your mouth.  This helps to lessen the effects of the acids that can cause cavities.  If you want to snack make sure it is something healthy.  This can include raw fruits and vegetables, nuts, or cheese.

Eat foods that are nutrient-rich

In order for your teeth to stay strong, cavity-free, and white they need nutrients.  It is important that in order to have dental health that you eat a variety of foods.  They should come from all five major food groups.  They get the calcium that they need from leafy greens and dairy.  Your teeth also need the phosphorous that is found in proteins like from poultry, meat, fish, and eggs.  Both of these nutrients, along with others, will help protect and restore the enamel on your teeth.

Limit things that will stain your teeth

It is quite possible that the things you are drinking could be dulling your healthy smile.  Some of the worse drinks include tea, wine, and coffee.  These drinks have very intense colour pigments that are called chromogens.  They will attach themselves to your enamel causing them to stain or become dull.  If you want a healthier smile and whiter teeth you need to cut back on drinking these three drinks.  If your teeth are already stained or dull from them you could use a fluoride toothpaste that can help you whiten your teeth.

Do not use tobacco or smoke

Not only is smoking or using tobacco bad for your health it will eventually stain your teeth according to the Banyo dentistIt can also cause gum disease which in turn can cause you to lose your teeth.  Smoking or using tobacco could also lead to oral cancer.  If you are having a tooth extraction or some type of oral surgery, it can slow down the time it will take you to heal.

Drink plenty of water

It is recommended that you drink eight glasses of water a day but it is advisable that if possible you carry a water bottle with you.  This way you can sip on water throughout the day.  When you sip water all day you can easily get in what you need to drink without feeling bloated from drink too much water at a time.  Water that is fluoridated is the best water for your teeth.  The fluoride in the water can help to ward off tooth decay and strengthen your teeth.  It helps to keep your mouth moist.  Water will also help to clean and wash away any food particles to keep bacteria from feeding on them.

Chew gum that is sugar-free

You should always brush between meals but sometimes that is not possible.  If you cannot brush after every meal you should chew sugar-free gum.  It can help to increase the flow of saliva which in turn will wash away any food in your mouth.  An increase in saliva flow will carry more phosphate and calcium to your teeth to help strengthen the enamel.

See your dentist regularly

This is very important in order to get regular checkups and cleanings.  Not being able to afford to see a dentist is no excuse.  Find an affordable dentist Brisbane and see them on a regular basis.  Seeing your dentist will help to spot any dental problems before they become worse.  Early diagnosis and treatment also make dental care more affordable.
