How Often Should You Change Your Locks
How Often Should You Change Your Locks
We all want to stay safe and sound at home. In fact, our homes are our castles, our safe havens. This means we want to keep them safe as well. And one of the basic ways you can do this is by changing your locks. The simple, humble door lock can be just the thing to protect your from a home intruder and can be the easiest entry point, no matter how strong of an alarm system, or how powerful a door you have. And you need to understand that there comes a time when you simply have to change your locks.
Now, how often you need to change your locks depends on how often certain circumstances occur. We suggest you read the article below and find out exactly when you simply must change your locks.
You lost your keys
First things first – you lost your keys. For whatever reason, you lost them, perhaps due to a wild night downtown, maybe just because you’re clumsy. Whatever the reason may be, you should change the locks. Now, the chances of someone actually finding your keys, figuring out where you live, and then deciding to abuse this fact are slim to none. Nonetheless, we stand behind what we said – change these locks. You will lose a lot of sleep over it, just knowing that your keys are somewhere out there, waiting to be picked up. Furthermore, you might have been pickpocketed, or maybe you lost them near your home.
Getting a new place
If you bought a house from somebody else (instead of having it built or ready-made) we suggest you change the locks. Now, there is a good chance that the local realtor has done this already, but you should still practice due diligence. So, ask the real estate agent whether they changed the locks or not. Get some proper evidence, like an invoice for example. If you feel uncomfortable being so pushy, or if the real estate agent doesn’t have any proof, we suggest you just change them as soon as possible.
Damaged locks
Have you ever been in a situation where you can’t enter your home? Where something happened to the locks, maybe something broke, or there is just too much dirt in there, and you can’t open it? Well, then you had to call a 24-hour locksmith and get things going. We suggest if you ever get into that kind of situation again, that you have him replace your locks completely. Changing things up a little can keep you extra safe. Think of it as a contingency plan that won’t really cost you anything (you have to replace the locks anyway), but that can save you from nasty surprises.
You were burgled
Now, we understand that this is a harrowing, unpleasant experience. However, you need to stay safe, and to do everything you can in order to continue staying safe even more. If your home was robbed or burgled recently, you would obviously want to change your locks, no question about it. There might be a couple of reasons for this. First of all, the locks might be damaged. However, the second more important reason is that this person might have broken into a key. Or, they may have found a way to prepare a copy of a key, and just bide their time and getting ready to rob you once again.
Personal issues
Now, this is none of our business, but we would like to state that if you had a difficult falling out with roommate or your significant other, changing the locks might be a good idea. If this person is not the most moral of people, or if they are slightly unhinged, changing your locks is always a good idea. Basically, if there exists anyone to whom you gave a spare key, and if you lost trust in this person, we suggest you change your locks.
And there you have it folks, a couple of times you should change your home locks. Sometimes personal issues get in the way, and you can’t trust a person you believed in anymore. Or, perhaps it’s as simple as you lost your keys. Maybe you were unfortunate and ended up with damaged locks. Maybe you were really unfortunate and got your house burgled. Whatever the case may be, it’s not the end of the world. Just call a good locksmith, and you’ll be good to go.
