Learn about The Women In Science Via A Game

How many famous women past and present can you name in the field of science? If the answer is ‘not many’ or ‘none’ you might want to support the fundraiser on IndieggoWomen In Science, a new card game –featuring female scientists. Why would anyone support such a fundraiser? Let’s admit it, not many people know about many women in science, and many women have done incredible things in science.

The creator of the Women in Science cards write on Indiegogo:” We are just parents looking for inspiring role models for our 7 year old daughter,” and continue “ We realised that we all known about singers, actresses. etc., but in the end very little about the great women of science. A quick search demonstrated that they do exist, but that for historical reasons they’ve rarely received the recognition they deserve.”

In our patriarchal society the assumption is that men did most important things in the world. Science and technology are often considered to be the forte of men. This isn’t quite the truth; the contribution of women to the progress of these areas shouldn’t be disregarded. There have been numerous gifted women scientists in history that made crucial discoveries and inventions in the world of science. There have been amazing scientist women, activists, entrepreneurs, political leaders, artists, etc. Women have been and are present in many important professions in the world. Women have always done amazing and the lack of credit doesn’t make them excellent.

Let’s look at some of these amazing women featured in the game:

1. Cecilia Payne

Cecilia Payne was an astronomer and astrophysicist from the early 20th century. She analysed the spectra of stars and novae, and discovered that the star were composed of 99% hydrogen and hellum.

2.  Rosalind Franklin

Rosalind Franklin was a British biophysicist best known for her work on the molecular structures of coal and graphite, and X-ray diffraction.

3. Marie Curie

Marie Curie was a Polish-born, French physicist and chemist best known for her contributions to radioactivity.

4. Wangari Maathai

Wangari Maathai was a Kenyan political and environmental activist and her country’s assistant minister of environment, natural resources and wildlife. She was the first African woman to receive a Nobel Prize.
