The Difference Between Yoga and Pilates

Yoga and Pilates have become increasingly popular due to their incredible mental and physical benefits.

Although they seem similar, there are some key differences. So how do you decide which one to incorporate into your wellbeing routine?

Here’s a guide to help you understand the differences between Pilates and Yoga so that you can decide which one is the best fit for you! The differences between yoga and Pilates – 6 key differences.

1 – Mat vs Machine

These two forms of exercise use completely different equipment.

Yoga uses a mat and minor equipment to assist with poses, such as blocks, straps and blankets. Although Pilates also can be performed on a mat, it also uses various machines such as the reformer, Cadillac, trapeze, ladder barrel, spine corrector etc.

The most popular machine used in Pilates is the reformer, which is a wooden ‘bedframe’ that uses different weighted spring combinations to create resistance when you move back and forth on the carriage.

2 – Spirituality

One of the most significant differences between Yoga and Pilates is the spiritual component.

Yoga is a meditative practice, working the mind just as hard as the body. Yoga was developed to create spiritual enlightenment within oneself through a series of poses.

On the other hand, Pilates came about to help injured athletes.

3 – The Core Focus

One of the core focuses of yoga is improving the body’s flexibility, as the various poses stretch the muscles and increase the range of motion.

In comparison, Pilates focuses on relaxing muscles and strengthening muscle groups.

4 – Poses and Movement

Movement and poses performed during Yoga and Pilates are very different as well as the duration in which these are held.

Yoga poses are held for much longer to stabilise the mind and body. Staying still in a pose takes more effort to be present.

Pilates movements are much shorter with fewer repetitions. The main focus on these moves is control and precision.

5. The Benefits of Yoga and Pilates

There are also subtle differences in the benefits that the two practices offer.

Yoga assists with:

  • Improving flexibility
  • Improving the quality of sleep
  • Relaxing and calming the mind, creating mindfulness and improving the mind-body-breath connection
  • Mental health by decreasing anxiety and stress
  • Maintaining healthy joints

Pilates assists with:

  • Increasing muscle strength and tone, particularly in the abdomen, lower back, hips and buttocks (the ‘core muscles’ of your body)
  • rehabilitation or prevention of injuries related to muscle imbalances
  • Increasing body awareness
  • Stabilising your spine and improving posture
  • Managing stress – fantastic relaxation exercise

6. The Ultimate Goal

Perhaps the most important difference between these two activities is the ultimate goal.

Yoga offers a meditative environment and promotes mental wellbeing, while Pilates focuses on the “core stability” of the body.

If you still can’t decide whether you are team Yoga or team Pilates, why not be on both teams and enjoy the benefits of both?!
