The top 10 destinations according to TripAdvisor

TripAdvisor has announced the world’s 10 top destinations in the seventh annual Traveller’s Choice awards, with Marrakech at the top of the list for the first time ever.

The list is based on the millions of reviews and opinions from TripAdvisor travellers. A combination of low average booking rates and fantastic traveller reviews on TripAdvisor has helped Asia, Africa and Eastern European destinations steal the place of old favourites like New York and Rome.

Who are the new comers to 10 top destinations around the world?

1. Marrakech


Marrakech, which came in number one, is widely referred as to as ‘Red City’. It lies in Morocco’s south western region.

The name Marrakech, which means “Land of God”, is the third largest city in Morocco, after Casablanca and Rabat, and lies near the foothills of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. It is a few hours from the foot of the Sahara Desert. Its location and contrasting landscape has made it an enviable destination in Morocco.

2. Combodia

Siem Reap

Siem Reap is located in northwestern Cambodia and is fast becoming a popular resort town. It’s a fast growing city with hotels, restaurants and nightclubs. The Angkor Wat temple is the central feature and contains the magnificent remains of the Khmer civilization. Thousands of feet of wall space are covered with intricate carvings depicting scenes from Hindu Mythology.

3. Istanbul


Turkey’s largest city gives you a blend of Asia and Europe. The world famous Blue Mosque and the Aya Sofya are two of the most iconic places to visit in this beautiful city. It’s no wonder it makes in the list as it’s a beautiful blend

4. Vietnam


The Vietnamese capital has aged wonderfully, preserving the Old Quarter, colonial architecture and monuments, while also making room for modern developments alongside.

5. Prague


Prague is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Eastern Europe. It is the cheapest European city in the top 10. The Old Town Square is at the heart of Prague’s Old Town and is a great place to hear some local music and purchase souvenirs.

6. London


The priciest of all the cities in the top 10, you’ll have to pay an average room rate of £162.25, to visit some of the iconic landmarks that London boasts.

7. Rome


Despite slipping five places in the top ten since last year, Rome remains a fan favourite. There are numerous cultural things to do in Rome, ranging from visiting The Colosseum to the Sistine Chapel at Vatican City. A beautiful city whether wanting to explore the nightlife and the cultural and historical side of Rome.

8. Buenos Aires


The capital and largest city of Argentina is a city unlike any other. Vibrant is an understatement when describing Buenos Aires, with great nightlife and incredible food. Where you find the world’s widest avenue, Avenida 9 de Julio, wich has seven lanes.

9. Paris


The most romantic city on earth, Paris came 9 on the list. The French capital boasts a wide array of famous tourist attractions, including the Eiffel tower, The Louvre and Notre Dame Cathedral.

10. Cape Town

Cape Town

Cape Town comes in as number 10. This is a wonderful city, with beautiful mountain ranges and pristine white beaches, excellent art galleries and some of the best and most affordable fine dining restaurants in the world.
