Investing in a new home is a huge step, which is why you want to make sure you are as satisfied with the end result. You need to inspect each room and look with great attention to make sure that no problems go unnoticed. There is nothing worse than discovering something that bothers you after the deal has already been sealed and there is nothing you can do about it. Budget
When thinking about your budget, there are a couple of things that should be the main points of discussion. The first one is how long you are planning to stay in that home. If you are buying a place but only plan on staying there for a few years, then you might want to save some of that money for a future property that should be your permanent home base. After all, investing in a home is a big step, and you want to make sure your investment is worthwhile. The other thing you should be considering is whether you are able to give a sizeable amount of money up front. Or you would rather stretch your renovation costs over a period of time. If the latter is your decision, you might be better off investing in a home that needs some work done, and fix it up yourself when you decide the time is right. Otherwise, invest more money now in a completely fixed-up home and avoid any future costs.
The space around the house
For some people, having a front porch where you can sit in the evening on a swing and drink lemonade is a must, while for others it is a complete waste of space. The same goes for a backyard, front yard, pool and everything else that surrounds the house. Sure, having an in-ground pool in your backyard might seem amazing, but if neither you or your housemates will be using it, then it is something you will want to save money on. On the other hand, if having a large backyard is your priority, make sure that the yard itself is as good as the space surrounding it. After all, what is the point of having a backyard if the neighbourhood rules state that no noise is allowed in the area? Another thing you need to consider is maintenance. Having a big yard might seem like a dream, but all that space needs to be regularly maintained and the lawn regularly mowed and trimmed. But do not worry. You can always opt for great grass pavers and be sure that your lawn will be the best looking in the neighbourhood.
The number of rooms
Every family has different needs for their living space and will need a different layout. Consider what purpose should each of the rooms have and organise the space accordingly. Does everyone need a room for themselves? Do you have frequent guest visits and sleepovers, and need a guest room, or even two? Do you like spending time together and need a large living room or are you more lone wolves and would benefit from multiple smaller spaces? Consult the people you will be living with and work out a solution that benefits you all. Understand that you might not get exactly what you want and that everyone might have to make a compromise to a certain extent. Buying a home comes at different times to all of us, and it is a big life decision. If you feel like you are still not ready for such a big decision, you might be better off renting for a while – and renting can also be a great way to try out a home before buying it.
