Staying Healthy While Working From Home

While many people may have started to like working from home, others feel stressed due to the lack of physical interaction with a co-worker. They may even form bad habits since they’re unfamiliar with remote work. It’s is then important to stay healthy while working from home.

This wouldn’t be an issue for people who have been working from home long before the pandemic. They already have everything planned out, including their workspace and schedule. They may even have an exercise program worked out already. So, their physical and mental health wouldn’t be much of an issue.

For newcomers to work-from-home life, they can still create a structure at home where they can take care of their physical and mental health while working. Here are some things they can do to accomplish this situation.

Set Up a Workspace

If you haven’t done this already, you should start looking for a place in the house where you can work without any distractions. It doesn’t have to be a separate room but you should be comfortable working in the area.

Some people prefer working close to a window while others prefer working close to a wall to avoid distractions. You can also consider the den as an option since it gives you the privacy you need in case you’re working on confidential things on the computer.

You can consider this workspace as your sanctuary where you can make phone calls without interruptions. It should also allow you to focus on your work so you can accomplish the tasks you wanted to finish at the end of the day.

Exercise Whenever Possible

When you’re at your workstation, you should get an ergonomic chair to use. Since you’ll likely stay in front of the computer the whole day, you should try to support your back to prevent any injuries. Additionally, stretching often allows you to protect your neck, back, and shoulders from unnecessary aches and pains.

Being at home also means you’re just a few steps away from the couch or the bedroom. Due to this, you might end up not being able to exercise at all. Even if you didn’t exercise while you were working at the office, you still had to walk from the parking area to your office and back. This may have been your only exercise in the past.

But you should still try to exercise whenever possible while you’re on a work-from-home arrangement. There are a few simple yet effective exercises you can try, such as the shoulder stretch, standing thigh stretch, neck stretch, and lower back stretch/

Follow a Routine

When you were working at the office, you had a schedule to follow. You can do the same thing with your new remote work arrangement. Working from home can even take away some stress you normally feel when you work from the office. Instead of dealing with the traffic while going to work, you can have a cup of coffee on the porch while waiting for your schedule to start working.

When you start working, make sure everyone in the house doesn’t disturb you. You should tell them that they can talk to you when you’re on a break. This means you should include breaks in your daily routine. A lunch break is also important since you also need to have a bite to eat during the day. Follow your routine so you’ll have a semblance of normalcy in the middle of the crisis.

Consult a Doctor When Necessary

While working, you may feel some aches and pains. With this, you should consult your doctor whenever necessary. You can use telemedicine or have a remote consultation so you won’t have to go to the doctor’s office if it’s not necessary.

There may even be instances when you need to see our dentist. With the vaccines gradually being distributed, it’s much safer to visit your doctor or dentist compared to a couple of months ago. At this point, you can even have the Invisalign procedure that you put off early last year due to the pandemic.

Stay in touch

Social interaction is one of the benefits of working onsite. Even if you aren’t able to see your coworkers physically, you can see each other virtually through a videoconferencing app. Using one of these apps allows you to stay in touch with them even if it’s not related to work.

You can even host a virtual coffee meeting or an online get-together with them. The important thing is that you get to touch base with them regularly and help everyone feel less isolated.

Working from home has its advantages and disadvantages. Knowing how to deal with these disadvantages will allow you to remain physically and mentally healthy until everything goes back to normal.
