Three reasons to gift your dress to another bride after your wedding

Most brides take great care and attention when it comes to choosing their perfect wedding dress. Whether you’re planning on wearing the fairytale outfit you dreamed of since you were small, or if you fell in love with an unexpected gown at the bridal shop, the ‘right’ wedding dress is all part of the excitement of your big day.

Unfortunately, bridal attire is not part of most people’s everyday wardrobe. Whilst the fact that it’s for one day only adds to the appeal of the right dress, it leaves brides with a dilemma – what to do with their dress after their nuptials are over. Of course, there’s always the option of storing it in the wardrobe, to look back on fondly in years to come. But what if you could give someone else the dress of their dreams? In this post, we explain three reasons why you may want to pass your wedding dress on.

It’s more eco-friendly

The carbon footprint of weddings has increased dramatically as they have gotten bigger and more elaborate. Far from an informal celebration in your parents’ backyard, modern weddings tend to involve impressive floral displays, large amounts of food, plenty of guests, new clothes and custom decorations, all of which have an environmental impact.

There’s been a push back on these mega celebrations in recent years, particularly post-pandemic. But regardless of the size of your wedding, one of the most helpful things you can do is to avoid single-use items as much as possible. This includes your wedding dress – by passing it on to another bride, you can ensure that the carbon cost of the garment is spread out over multiple celebrations.

It reduces the cost for others

Wedding dresses can be extremely expensive, with the average off-the-rack gown costing around $3,200 in Australia, and a custom one costing even more, at $4,800. Global supply chain issues have only pushed costs up, making wedding gowns a big investment for modern brides.

Gifting your dress to a charity initiative or just putting it up for sale yourself can help other women get a dress that they love, at a price they can afford.

Pass on good luck

Ever heard of ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a sixpence in your shoe’? This old English saying was meant to ward off bad luck if the bride followed the instructions on her wedding day. Now adopted across the world, this advice is still popular with many brides as a fun nod to tradition (without the sixpence). So, why not let your dress be the ‘something old’ for another bride and send them off with good will to a lifetime of happiness? Who knows, it could even mean good luck for you too – a happy outcome all round.

Share your joy

It might feel strange to think of parting with your carefully-chosen dress, but by passing it on you have a chance to share your joy and spread happiness to other brides-to-be as well. Plus, you’re doing a good deed for the planet – surely a positive start to married life.
